There are many aquarists who consider this to be correct, stating that mother nature knows best. These aquarists include several well known names, and they are concerned with captive reef systems.

The fish only aquarium can be kept at a lower SG. In the many years that aquarists have kept fish only systems, and remember these existed well before captive reefs, it was found that there were advantages in maintaining a lower SG. First of all, there was evidence that certain fish parasites do not do well at a lower SG. This is supported to an extent by one method of dealing with parasite infected fish – lowering the SG to destroy them. However, the SG being considered here is not as low as that. The level is 1.022. This will mean that the fish hopefully will not fall foul of parasites so easily, and the cost of salt to the aquarist will be lower (though the cost is not the most important consideration). It has also been stated that the marine fish natural bodily function of water transference is less strenuous. There is no evidence that maintaining fish at a lower SG is detrimental to them.

SG in a captive reef system is not so straightforward. A higher SG should be maintained as there is evidence that some corals may not open polyps in a lower one. Corals are also stressed over the long term by a too high or worse too low SG and could even die if the situation was allowed to continue. As said this is long term – changes in SG of a short duration, though very undesirable, will not have the same result. It is reported that soft corals are more influenced by incorrect SG *.

I have a soft coral reef that I do not maintain at 1.026. It is maintained at 1.024. This level does not fluctuate by any amount to speak of. The corals are healthy and growing and there are, and have never been, any signs of stress.

So, an aquarist keeping a fish only aquarium can safely reduce the SG to 1.022. There is no reason it could not be higher, after all the fish live in the wild at a higher level, but it is well known that a lower SG will do no harm.

Where there are corals involved, it will be best to maintain a higher level of 1.026. The aquarist with the confidence of experience can lower this SG very carefully over a lengthy period, and note if there are any bad reactions by the corals. If there are, the SG must be raised, again over a period. Sudden changes are not wanted. If there are no bad reactions, then SG 1.024 is probably the lowest that should be maintained.

If aquarists are able to take their swing needle or float needle hydrometers to somewhere that can test the accuracy against a known correct measure, all the better. The aquarist can then add to or take from the required measurement on their hydrometer to obtain more accuracy.

Magnesium sulfate (or magnesium sulphate) is a chemical compound containing magnesium, sulfur and oxygen, with the formula MgSO₄. It is often encountered as the heptahydrate epsomite (MgSO₄·7H₂O), commonly called "Epsom salt". Another hydrate form is kieserite.

Anhydrous magnesium sulfate is used as a drying agent. Since the anhydrous form is hygroscopic (readily absorbs water from the air) and is therefore difficult to weigh accurately, the hydrate is often preferred when preparing solutions, for example in medical preparations. Epsom salt has been traditionally used as a component of bath salts.

Properties

Magnesium sulfate is the primary substance that causes the absorption of sound in seawater.^[1] Absorption, in this case, means the conversion of acoustic energy to heat energy. The conversion is a strong function of frequency. Lower frequencies are less affected by the salt, so that the acoustic energy travels much farther in the ocean. Boric acid also contributes to absorption; but the most abundant salt in seawater, sodium chloride, has no known effect on sound absorption. 

Applications

In agriculture and gardening, magnesium sulfate is used to correct magnesium deficiency in soil, since magnesium is an essential element in the chlorophyll molecule. It is most commonly applied to potted plants, or to magnesium-hungry crops, such as potatoes, roses, tomatoes, peppers and cannabis. The advantage of magnesium sulfate over other magnesium soil amendments (such as dolomitic lime) is its high solubility.

Anhydrous magnesium sulfate is commonly used as a desiccant in organic synthesis due to its affinity for water. During work-up, an organic phase is saturated with magnesium sulfate until it no longer forms clumps. The hydrated solid is then removed with filtration or decantation. Other inorganic sulfate salts such as sodium sulfate and calcium sulfate may also be used in the same way.

Magnesium sulfate is used in bath salts, particularly in flotation therapy where high concentrations raise the bath water's specific gravity, effectively making the body more buoyant. This property is also used to restore some Lava lamps damaged by being shaken by exchanging the water and adding drops of a concentrated solution until sustainable buoyancy is reached. Traditionally, it is also used to prepare foot baths, intended to soothe sore feet. The reason for the inclusion of the salt is partially cosmetic: the increase in ionic strength prevents some of the temporary skin wrinkling ("pruning" – partial maceration) which is caused by prolonged immersion of extremities in pure water. However, magnesium sulfate can also be absorbed into the skin, reducing inflammation. It is also sometimes found in bottled mineral water, and accordingly is sometimes listed in the contents thereof. It may also be used as a coagulant for making tofu.^[4]

Magnesium sulfate heptahydrate is also used to maintain the magnesium concentration in marine aquaria which contain large amounts of stony corals as it is slowly depleted in their calcification process. In a magnesium-deficient marine aquarium calcium and alkalinity concentrations are very difficult to control because not enough magnesium is present to stabilize these ions in the saltwater and prevent their spontaneous precipitation into calcium carbonate.^[5]

For Nitrate and Phosphate Reduction

NP BioPearls are pelletized biodegradable polymers that make waste from the water, mainly
nitrate and phosphate, are converted into bacteria. This keeps the aquarium water achieve
natural marine water level.

The new formula NP Reducing BioPearls are composed of 100% pure biologically degradable
 polymers that can be placed in a fluidized filter or mini filter canister. The pellets will allow
aerobic growth of bacteria which consequently will consume nitrate and phosphate simultaneously.
The bacteria will use up the carbon from the BioPearls, whilst nitrogen and phosphorus are
taken from the water as nitrate and (ortho)phosphate. This conversion of organic BioPearls
(together with inorganic nitrogen and phosphorus) into microbial biomass is called immobilization.
In addition, anaerobic layers will develop, resulting in additional denitrification.

To avoid the sensitive marine animals being unadapted for sharply reducing of NO3 and PO4,
 we recommend adding NP BioPellets in a successive way. For example: BioPearls should
 added in 200L aquarium water as follows:

Caution：
-Maintain sufficient water flow through the NP BioPearls, to prevent production of hydrogen
 sulfide gas.
-The use of NP BioPearls in marine aquariums must be accompanied by the use of a protein
  skimmer to achieve the export of bacteria and assimilated nutrients. It is not necessary for the
  outlet of the filter containing pellets to be positioned near the intake of a protein skimmer,
  but it is necessary to have a protein skimmer running on the system.  
-The use of ozone and UV will negatively affect bacterial recruitment of the BioPearls and increase
 the maturation time of the filter. So we won’t reocommend use the NP BioPearls with ozone
 and UV at the same time when cultivating bacteria.
